Who I AM

I am an assistant professor in sports communication and journalism at DePaul University. Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, I pivoted from a career in journalism to one in academia.

I received my Ph.D. in journalism and media from the University of Texas at Austin and an M.A. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Before that, I was a Lumberjack (figuratively speaking) at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. I have worked as a writer and editor at various publications, such as SB Nation, Salon.com, Yahoo Sports, and The Salt Lake Tribune.

At DePaul, I serve as the advisor of the award-winning student chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ). I am also an affiliate faculty member of the Latin American and Latino Studies Department.

I live on the North Side of Chicago with my partner, Lilli, and our two beautiful boys, as well as our two handsome pups. When not teaching or writing, you can find me playing a crossword, watching sports, or enjoying a frosty beverage — sometimes all at once!
